Motor racing started almost as soon as the first car had been built, although the Paris to Rouen  127km race was the world’s first official contest. As technology developed so did the types and terrains of racing with the first custom-built tracks appearing in 1907. From long-distance rough terrain to short speed tracks and road races, cars and driving styles evolved and developed when true Grand Prix racing emerged in the 1930s. After the Second World War auto racing and motorsports diverged more and more based on locality and driving conditions. The Europeans favoring the road-style, tight, winding tracks still seen in its near original form in races such as the F1 in Monaco or the Isle of Man TT. American cars and races, however, reflected a more open terrain with powerful engines such as hot rods or drag racing.

Today the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) is the governing body for many auto events around the world, including the most prestigious F1 and WRC (World Rally Championship).

Formula racing is single-seat, open-wheel cars with various classifications: Formula 1, Formula 3, Super Formula, etc. Don’t miss any of the action by watching on vip. In North America similar style cars are used in the IndyCar Series.

Popular in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nordic countries and Britain is Touring car racing  including V8 Supercars (Australia), British Touring Car Championship, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), and the World Touring Car Championship.  These heavily-modified road going cars are perhaps closer to the cars that most fans drive giving, perhaps, an extra dimension to that rush-hour daydream. Check out the motorsports schedule.

Grand Tourers (GTs) or Sports Cars are built for closed track endurance races with events including: the FIA World Endurance Championship. The main series for GT car racing is the FIA GT1 World Championship. There is also the FIA GT3 European Championship as well as the less powerful GT4 European Cup. Other major GT championships include the Japanese Super GT championship and the International GT Open for GT2 and GT3 cars. There are also national GT championships using mainly GT3 and GT4 cars featuring professional and amateur drivers.

Meanwhile in the USA the most popular form of motorsports  is stock car racing governed by NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). NASCAR’s premier series is the Sprint Cup Series, its most famous races being the Daytona 500, the Southern 500, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Brickyard 400. NASCAR also runs several feeder series, including the Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series.
